The heart stopping moment

Miss Dizzy had been left at the vets to have a plate put in her wrist joint as she had injured it. My husband rang me and he said it’s not her wrist and i sware my heart stopped I knew what was coming next no idea how I just did.

“She has a tumour and the vet wants to know what we want to do, she can have her leg amputated, she can be given pain meds to make it easier for her but it is likely she wont last long or …..”

Well the last option was no option for us to consider. The xray of her chest showed clear so we decided while she was under anesthetic she would have her leg amputated. I am sure my heart was about to burst through my chest how I was going to get through the day at work I had no idea.

The first thing I did when I got off the phone was post to twitter facebook and a couple of rescue forums I belong to, guess I was seeking support from wherever I could get it.

It was up there with the worst days of my life. The fact is I know dogs cope with only having 3 legs but it was my angel my Dizzy and she hates the vets and she had to stay there overnight and needless to say i was a mess.

That was 25th of May and it still feels like yesterday etched on my mind for ever

  1. Forget the past, Dizzy does! It’s all about quality of life now, not quantity. Dreading over what’s happened will only make enjoying every moment you have together more difficult.

Many have found the book Without Regret helpful in coping with the decision to amputate, we did.

  2. yes, shake it off. you made the best choice for dizzy. hope she is doing well after the surgery…pictures?? we’d love to know more of dizzy’s story.

  3. Oh, what a horrible shock, of course it was one of the worst days of your life! The theory of how well dogs do sounds good on paper, and then it is your baby and all that theory goes out the window. But a decision must be made and no one wants to make it but you did and saved your girl’s life. So GOOD FOR YOU.

So enough about that. How is Dizzy now? I’m guessing the recent past was difficult but now she’s on the upswing so you have to tell us all about your special girl. Like our wise admin said, Dizzy isn’t sitting around thinking about May 25th. She’s thinking about having FUN. So what fun is on her mind?
